We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world. We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum. A.W. Tozer
Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the word of God, in favor of that side will be cast the vote of truth. --Basil of Caesarea

Random Aberrations, Apostasies, and Heresies

Where did this nonsense about “Love Offerings” come from?!?!  I’m really tired of this phrase, and while looking for some reason behind it, I came across this article by another person tired of this phrase.  (Some really judgmental comments on this post surprised me.

Biologos is now promoting not only evolution, but also outright heresy.

Testing your charismatic experience against the Word of God.

Christianity Today Astray has crossed the lines of decency.   They long ago crossed the line into paganism and false teachings, but they aren’t even decent about it any more.

More Patricia King lying nonsense.  Why oh why does anyone listen to here?!??!

Just as bad is Heidi Baker - again.  How in the world do these people get where they are?!?!  (I’m still trying to figure out just what an “oily life” is - what the heck does it mean?!?!)

Spiritual Gift tests are bogus.  They are nothing more than copying the idea of

Beth Moore—high school girl.

Via Doug Evans I learned this week that Greg Laurie is now on the heretic TV station TBN.  As I said last time, he is sliding into apostasy for popularity.  Read Doug’s article for more information about Greg.

Another horrid “Christian” movie coming soon will be sure to sell out many theaters, and the associated marketing of books, journals, study guides, etc, will overtake the “Christian” book stores minefields.  “The Young Messiah” claims to be biblical, but since we know virtually nothing biblically about that period of Jesus’ life it has to be all made up out of peoples’ apostate minds.  Of course it is IMMEDIATELY unbiblical by making Jesus’ brothers and sisters to be his cousins, because that is the Romanist teaching in order to keep Mary a perpetual virgin — a totally unbiblical concept.  The actor portraying “Jesus” looks very girly - about as feminine as it gets. The list of apostates and heretics promoting it doesn’t surprise me.   Save your money.  (Here’s another good review.)

The “apocalypse” examined by a host of false prophets just demonstrates the mess that can happen when one leaves Scripture behind.
Speaking of false prophets, Doug Evans has an excellent article starting off a series on the New Apostolic Reformation.  These guys are dangerous.

The Mark Driscoll plot thickens.

More deceit in the Mormon church - fake reviews of the Book of Mormon.

Some good information via video on another cult, the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The Cripplegate is analyzing Rick Warren’s Celebrate Recovery program.  You can pretty much assume that, coming from Warren & Co., it will be unbiblical psychobabble.  Part 1 is here, part 2 is here. (Just be careful of the TULIPs in this review.)

Mary Dalke has a very thorough post examining Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling book, with good warnings against it.  The post also addresses ecumenicism.

To end with some humor, there’s a new Christian satire site, The Babylon Bee. I was especially amused with this article, while this one really pointed to the modern idea of teaching from movies — no matter how horrid they may be!

Hi Glenn,

Ok, the Babylon Bee, what a good laugh! I needed that today, thanks!

Not surprised with Biologos. As for Christianity Astray... oh my! Wow, that's brazen and offensive.

The Young Messiah actor who portrays young Jesus, wow, I see what you mean about his appearance lacking boyishness.

I did get a good chuckle at the GotQs link about so-called spiritual gift "tests"... because several weeks ago, after hearing a pastor talk about finding your spiritual gifts using an online test (he even gave the website), I started laughing to myself right in the pew, and looked at my equally bewildered husband. Gee, I thought we learned from the Holy Spirit (the giver of the gifts, per HIS discretion), and from other believers (who confirm His work in us) what our spiritual gifts are...?

Carolyn,

Our pastor noted that they will be having people take a "spiritual gift test" and I was shocked. The whole idea is a crock.

As for the other note from you, you assume correctly. You can always email me rather than commenting for those sorts of things :)

Hi Glenn,

Yup, "spiritual gift tests" are a crock, indeed. Oh brother, talk about doctrines of man instead of a church truly operating in the Spirit.

And gotcha, thanks!

Thank you for continuing to warn and also for linking to my article!

Another great collection Glenn! And the link to the Babylon Bee! what a coups! The world needs as much good Christian humor as we can get.

Love that quote from Ryle!

Hi Glenn,

Love offering = guilt offering, yes!

Biologos - sigh. They are casting off their sheep's clothing. Not that many of the new evangelicals will care.

Great questions from Pamela Courvette on Truth or Snare.

But the most significant of all is buried at the end of the article about the Racketeering lawsuit against Mark Driscoll. The Seattle Times article states:

What remains to be seen is how all this will affect Driscoll. On Feb. 1, Driscoll announced that he was starting The Trinity Church in Phoenix. He boasted a high-powered group of religious leaders behind him, despite his past in Seattle.

"He boasted a high-powered group of religious leaders behind him." And we wonder why it seems the evangelical church continues faster and faster down apostate road.

It's a comfort not to be the only one who sees the rot. Thank you.

Hey Glenn,

Glad to see light shined on Greg Laurie, I've been fascinated how long he has been able to fly under the radar.

Some of TBN's Monday line up includes -

Steven Furtick
Joel Osteen
Joseph Prince
John Hagee
James MacDonald
Joyce Meyers
Kenneth Copeland
Robert Morris
Creflo Dollar
Jessie Duplantis
T.D. Jakes

Oh yeah, and Greg Laurie. Nuff said?

Alec,

Yes, Driscoll starting a new church is abhorrent. I noted this in my February 10th "Random" post. The man has no shame.

IF only MORE Christians would wake up to the rot around them!

Anonymous, 5:02 PM,

TBN is a hotbed, a nest of all that is heretical, so anyone who ISN'T a heretic is soiling himself by being there.

Pamela Couvrette, great questions indeed, thanks Alec to (re)mentioning her post. I missed that one, Glenn, in reading your RAAH roundup. My eye skipped from the Biologos to the CT article.

Driscoll, how ever did I miss that one? Rot. Good word. Rot.

"TBN is a hotbed, a nest of all that is heretical, so anyone who ISN'T a heretic is soiling himself by being there."

You've definitively said Rick Warren teaches heresy and called him an apostate, name something Rick Warren has said or done Greg Laurie doesn't agree with.

He's a wolf.

Glenn E. Chatfield said...

Anonymous,

I don't know what Greg Laurie agrees or disagrees with from Rick Warren -- Do you?

Anonymous said...

Glenn,

Yes, I believe Greg Laurie agrees with Rick Warren on just about everything. He has called Rick Warrens Purpose Driven Life a movement of God, has filled in for him at Saddleback, had him speak at his Harvest Crusade basically putting his stamp of approval on him to all of Calvary Chapel (over 1500 churches) and the evangelical church at large...this year 6000 churches and venues carried his Harvest Crusade.

He is also very ecumenical with those he may or may not agree with e.g., working with Roman Catholics, speaking at conferences with Christine Caine, Brian Houston, Steven Furtick, Mark Driscoll, Rick Warren, et al.

He has supported Contemplatives like Chuck Fromm, Leonard Sweet, Gungor, David Crowder...

He posts pictures of himself with TBN's Matt and Laurie Crouch and has spoken at Word of Faith events.

He tweeted for everyone to check out Steven Furtick's book Chatterbox.

I could go on, he seems to get a pass on this because of his evangelism but what is he leading them into? He had Levi Lusko (check him out) preach at Harvest this year and posts about him all the time.

At some point it is not guilt by association but guilt by participation.

Glenn,

This came to my attention today -

Click on "Speakers" and you will notice Greg Laurie along with others speaking with flat out false teachers. I will name a couple of the most obvious.

Kenneth Copeland - Word of Faith/heretic
Robert Morris - Word of Faith/heretic
Sammy Rodriguez - NAR Apostle/heretic
James Robison - False teacher/heretic/works with T D Jakes and others

Oh dear! The folks at Christianity Today are allowing a homosexual to write on the topic of homosexuality. Have they forgotten the meaning of Scriptures like 1 Corinthians 6:9-11? Was there ever a time when this site preached orthodox doctrine, Glenn? If so, how did this all happen?

Glenn E. Chatfield said...

CT left orthodoxy too many years ago. They went the way if seeker-sensitive and market-driven.
