We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world. We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum. A.W. Tozer
Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the word of God, in favor of that side will be cast the vote of truth. --Basil of Caesarea
Once you learn to discern, there's no going back. You will begin to spot the lie everywhere it appears.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service. 1 Timothy 1:12

False Gospels Are Poison

To undermine the “truth of the gospel,” Satan has invented clever counterfeit gospels that promise life but damn the soul.  Those who preach these lies…are cursed by Paul — and rightly so.  These false gospels are like rat poison — very tasty and 98.6 percent nutritious, but containing just enough hidden poison to kill.  Bereans must be prepared to contrast the lie with God’s truth and to warn the unwary earnestly and clearly.

What is mind boggling is how many people, including Christians, completely understand this metaphor in the physical world, but make excuses/deny it/make light of it in the spiritual.

No one in their right mind would drink a glass of orange juice with even 0.5% rat poison in it.

But how many Christians will happily read the latest "Christian" books, or see the current faddish "Christian" movies, even though they contain substantially more doctrinal error than the above mentioned tainted orange juice...?!

You are absolutely right Carolyn. This is the phrase the I hear often within the charismatic/pentecostal circles of women who believe they are witnessing great spiritual wisdom to me; "You need to chew on the meat and spit out the bones." I have come to learn this means "pick out the few truths any certain preacher or teacher is promoting and disregard the rest."

A "pick and choose" sort of faith so to speak. This is what happens when feelings and expriences are held in higher regard than the Word of God.

I believe God's Word is clear concerning these things "For I testify unto every man that hearth the words of prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the thing which are written in this book." Revelation 22:18-19

Of course people are assuming that no one will choke on the bones!

I've heard the "chew on meat/spit out bones" argument as well, but not from pentecostals/charismatics. I've heard it from several non-charismatic believers. It seems to be a common justification, doesn't it.

And as Glenn said, "Of course people are assuming that no one will choke on the bones" - Right!!!!!!!!!!

I had someone tell me that phrase - chew the meat and spit the bones. Why would I want to listen to someone throwing me bones that can hurt me?! There's no discernment. People want to feel good and make up their own Jesus, yes, pick and choose. A new age friend told me she believes what makes her heart happy. That seems to be a popular way of doing things these days. But we know what the bible says about the heart. So many lack a love for the truth.
