We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world. We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum. A.W. Tozer
Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the word of God, in favor of that side will be cast the vote of truth. --Basil of Caesarea
Once you learn to discern, there's no going back. You will begin to spot the lie everywhere it appears.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service. 1 Timothy 1:12

The Milk of Mindless Repetition!

Another song new to me was used this past Sunday during our worship.  It is titled “Have Your Way,” by Don Moen.  Take a look:

Have your way
Have your way
Holy Spirit, fill our hearts
And have your way

As we wait (we wait on you)
And as we pray (we pray to you)
Speak your word into our hearts
And have your way

Have your way
Have your way
Holy Spirit, fill our hearts
And have your way

As we wait (we wait on you, Lord)
And as we pray (we pray to you)
Speak your word into our hearts
And have your way

Have your way
Have your way
Holy Spirit, fill our hearts
And have your way

As we wait (we wait on you)
And as we pray (we pray to you)
Speak your word into our hearts
And have your way

Speak your word into our hearts
And have your way

Speak your word into our hearts
And have your way

Speak your word into our hearts
And have your way

Well, there was also the obligatory band bridge.  This song is obviously used to manufacture emotions.

This was a day which we celebrated the Lord’s table, when we should have had meat.  Oh, there were a couple old hymns, but this one should have been replaced with something that was in line with what we were celebrating.  By the third time through I was shaking my head in frustration.  Oh, and we also sang, “Give Us Clean Hands,” which we sang FOUR times through!!

I’m tired of emotion-manufacturing pap being brought into the assembly.  The teaching where we attend is excellent and their leadership overall is very good, but I don’t think our shepherds understand that our songs are also teaching us, and if you continue a diet of pap and emotions, you will never mature in the faith.

As an aside, we have begun attending another assembly every other week.  It also has a good teaching elder, and seems to have good leadership.  Their songs are back-to-basic ones, both old hymns and new ones which are meaty and don’t prey on emotions.  The reason we won’t stay at this one is because they are Presbyterian (PCA), which means we would have to tolerate TULIPs (they haven't come up yet with us).

It seems that the only place we will hear meaty music and not emotion-driving pap is either in KJV Only churches or PCA churches. Leastways that’s what I found investigating around here!

You'd think they would be embarrassed to write such trite and repetitive lyrics. Ugh!

Hi Glenn,

Throughout the years, we have found that certain "Bible" and "Baptist" churches do still utilize some hymnody, though most feel the need to also sing those annoying contemporary, repetitious CCM songs. We don't understand why, other than maybe they think they will "appeal to the youth".

Maybe call around your area to any churches that have a sound online doctrine statement, and ask the pastors what they do for worship music. Though sometimes online they help you out and save the phone call by showing a picture of their worship time... if you see neon lights, smoke, etc, that's usually a bad sign. :)

"The teaching where we attend is excellent and their leadership overall is very good, but I don’t think our shepherds understand that our songs are also teaching us, and if you continue a diet of pap and emotions, you will never mature in the faith."

Exactly. Sadly as you've pointed out in this blog so many times, most Bible preaching churches today have nauseating music.

And repeating your comment: "..our songs are also teaching us"

This is also why men should be leading the congregational music, not women.

And a quick afterthought - many years ago, we attended a Bible church that ONLY used hymns, and many solid, edifying ones at that. The weekly worship in song was so rich and full, it was beautiful. We even sang hymns during communion. Unfortunately, serious internal corruption in the leadership developed and ended our (and other sound believers) time there. Sadly we've never been to another assembly with such good music.

Carolyn,

I long ago searched "Bible" and "Baptist" type churches in the area, questioning their leadership and/or examining their on-line information, as well as talking to people who already attend them. And that is when I came to the conclusion that only the KJVO or fundamental PCA churches leave the junk behind.

We began attending this PCA assembly because good friends of ours left the same church we left in early 2015 -- they departed first. Music to them is a very important aspect and the husband has a very low tolerance for pap music. He is also, like me, anti-Calvinist, but they settled in there because of the excellent teaching and the excellent music choices. Like me, he just ignores the TULIPs and other stuff in the PCA teachings. IF one is discerning with the TULIPs and other nonsense, it is a good "happy medium" to get away from pap.

Hi Glenn,

Wow, ALL the Bible and Baptist churches in your area aren't worth attending? That's sad. Very, very sad.

It's not that they aren't worth attending, it's that regardless of how good their teachings are, etc, they are into the whole CCM thing.

I understand. That's what I figured you meant, that despite the teaching being correct, the music - which is half of the service! - wasn't of equal Biblical soundness. Sorry I didn't communicate with clarity what I meant to say.

I still see it as sad. It's as if churches don't understand that worship music isn't just "music". It's actually another form of Biblical instruction... just with pitch.

Dear brother in the Lord,

A perfect church does not exist. I get what you are saying...but you will never find perfect church on this earth. There will always be "something wrong" because we are all imperfect people that NEED a Savior! Rejoice and enjoy where you have chosen to attend as much as you can and keep seeking to bless the people there.

Anonymous,

I know there is no such thing as a perfect church, but NO church should be battering their members with mindless drive, feeding them a diet of pap. This is one reason why spiritual maturity is so lacking nowadays. We have attended many assemblies over the years and all have things we disagree with, but we only get fed up when the bad begins to outweigh the good.
