We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world. We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum. A.W. Tozer
Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the word of God, in favor of that side will be cast the vote of truth. --Basil of Caesarea
Once you learn to discern, there's no going back. You will begin to spot the lie everywhere it appears.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service. 1 Timothy 1:12

Random Aberrations, Apostasies, and Heresies

An interesting look at false “spiritual warfare.

Fred Butler is now tackling heretic Hugh Ross’ book, Navigating Genesis.  Looks to be a good series exposing the false teachings of Ross’ ministry.

Jen Hatmaker and her husband are standing firm in their ideology about homosexuality and the Bible — they claim the Bible only addresses homosexual behavior in certain circumstances, which doesn’t include “a life-long monogamous commitment,” which they claim “can be holy before God.” This lie has been propagated over and over by the “gay Christian” cult, and has been prove false by proper hermeneutics ad nauseum.  They want to call “holy” what God has called an abomination!  This couple are dangerous wolves, and have proven they are not Christians.

Rachel Held Evans, another well-known false teacher, has jumped on the Hatmaker bandwagon supporting them and those who practice homosexual behaviors.

Interesting that the books RHE recommends are all by liberals who reject what the Bible says and twist scripture beyond recognition so as to support what God calls abominable.  I’d suggest those who doubt what God says, and who need to learn real hermeneutics, go find these books (for starters) and learn the truth:
The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Texts and Hermeneutics, by Robert A.J. Gagnon;
Straight & Narrow? Compassion & Clarity in the Homosexuality Debate, by Thomas E. Schmidt; Scripture & Homosexuality: Biblical Authority and the Church Today, by Marion L. Soards; The Same Sex Controversy: Defending and Clarifying the Bible’s Message About Homosexuality, by James R. White & Jeffrey D. Niell.

Lifeway has pulled Hatmaker’s books, but this only shows that they have limits to what apostasy and false teachings they will tolerate; after all, they sell tons of material by false teacher Beth Moore and false prophet Sarah Young (among others).  As this article points out, Lifeway has no doctrinal guidelines to begin with.

However, this incident also shows another problem with Hillsong — their lead artist says  the Hatmaker’s teaching on same-sex fake marriage to be “refreshing!

Answering the Galileo Myth.  Good information for the next time you deal with and atheist claiming the Church has always denied science.

The different gospel of Seth Barnes, head of World Race and Adventures in Missions, is horrid!!!!  He is leading many to a false Christ.

Origin of the Emergent Church movement, and it’s prime teachers.

Michael Brown shows lack of discernment as well as personal gullibility.

Bridal Mysticism” - i.e., “Jesus is my boyfriend” theology.  This makes me wonder about Beth Moore’s status; did she ever really know the true Gospel?

Bethel students are so deceived as to think they can heal a man in a wheelchair.  This is an example of the harm caused by Bill Johnson and his ilk.

Until next week, keep on discerning!

Thanks for the article on the Galileo myth. I had never really given that much thought, but he makes some very good points!

Answering the Galileo Myth is a great article! I had a similar discussion with a Christian school teacher yesterday, her point was a bit different but similar, and my response was similar to this article, but not as well educated (I couldn't remember that it was Aristotels failed view of the universe that was the main culprit)

In the end, good and properly conducted science is merely the study of God's logical creation. She even had an issue with planets and stars existing because they're merely called lights in the bible. My response to that is "Zebras and house cats aren't mentioned in the bible, but they exist as zebras and house cats because that's what God made them to be" not nearly as astute as Galileo's “The laws of nature are written by the hand of God in the language of mathematics.”

I see problem not so much as bad science (which is a big problem) but really bad teaching of History. Proper instruction of Galileo and this myth wouldn't exist. Proper teaching of the facts of Giordano Bruno and lauded scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson wouldn't have made a fool of himself on his remake of Cosmos. I even had a "history professor" teach that there were no bombers during WWI. My next paper was on the bombing of London during WWI by German zeppelin bombers.

I agree with you, Doug.

If proper history was taught, a huge percentage of myths would be destroyed, and many people would cease to be liberals!

I've never really checked out anything Hugh Ross has done, but I have referenced him as an example of those who became believers (to whatever degree they are) because of in response to those who claim no scientist worth his salt believes in God. That point alone indicates his value. As to how his belief manifests, that's an entirely 'nother story.

With Michael Brown, I'm most familiar with him via his columns posted at Townhall.com, and one or two talks I've seen online at one point or another. I've seen nothing that gives me pause. Unless someone's really out there, like a Dan Trabue type, I can ignore a few discrepancies. But he's not one of my main sources for doctrinal opinions anyway. At the same time, could it be that what is regarded as his gullibility is really no more than the same tolerance for minor disagreement?

Art,

I've read Hugh Ross and wouldn't recommend him for anything, because his theology is very, very skewed. I mean, this is a guy who says God created soulless human beings before he created Adam & Eve! He treats Genesis essentially as just a legend.

I like Brown as a conservative commentator -- he's really good at that. But theologically he is way off base any more. He is very much into charismania and defends the likes of Benny Hinn and his ilk. And he continues to support the NAR.
