We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world. We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum. A.W. Tozer
Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the word of God, in favor of that side will be cast the vote of truth. --Basil of Caesarea
Once you learn to discern, there's no going back. You will begin to spot the lie everywhere it appears.

The Problem of Marketing Megachurches

In architecture and style…the megachurches are a gigantic mutation in the churches’ age-old “edifice complex.”  They are natural counterparts of megamalls, super-super-markets, and multiplex cinemas, and resemble a cross between shopping malls and theme parks—modernity’s ultimate in people-moving selling-machines.  The result is “spiritual emporiums” or the “malling of religion”—grand cathedrals of consumption, one-stop church complexes premised on controlled environments with multiple-option boutiques catering to diverse needs.  Through cars, their “local church” catchment area becomes citywide; through television, worldwide.  Or in its public appeal, niche-marketed church growth threatens to reduce the gospel to the level of what Phillip Rieff calls the “rubber nipple therapies” on the great “anxiety market.”

But for Christians the most important impact of marketing is always on the message itself.  One church-growth marketer claims that the difference between “growth” and “evangelism” and “marketing” is only semantics.  He is absolutely wrong.  As historian David Potter pointed out in his penetrating analysis of advertising: once marketing becomes dominant, the concern is not with “finding an audience to hear their message but rather with finding a message to hold their audience.”  After all, when the audience and not the message is sovereign, the good news of Jesus Christ is no longer the end, but just the means.

Quantity is NOT Quality

Quantity does not measure quality.  Numbers…have little to do with truth, excellence, or character.  As on sociologist says, “Big Mac,” even with billions and billions of hamburgers served, need not mean “Good Mac.”  But what is misleading even at the trivial level of fast food becomes dangerous as one moves through sports prowess, educational attainment, and presidential character to spiritual depth.  For church growth viewed in measurable terms, such as numbers, is trivial compared to growth in less measurable but more important terms, such as faith, character, and godliness.  Having growth in terms of numbers, of course, does not rule out the more important spiritual growth.  But it does not necessarily include this type of growth either.

The World is Our Enemy

The world is the enemy of the Christian.  You do not go out of it, but you must not spend too much time in it.  If you spend too much of your time in a worldly atmosphere you will find that the edge of your spiritual life will become dulled.  There is nothing wrong inherently in looking at television or listening to the radio, but if you spend too much time in doing so, it is certain that you will not be able to pray so well, and you will lose your fast for the Scriptures.

Are You a Slack Christian?

The slack Christian is always a miserable Christian — grumbling and complaining, asking why this and why that.  The answer to that is to take more exercise, exercise your senses on the Word, come and listen to the exposition of the Word, avail yourself of every opportunity of doing so.

But look at it in this way also:  Are you able to help others and to teach others?  If not, the reason may well be that you only attend a place of worship once on a Sunday or perhaps still more infrequently.  You imagine that is enough.  But if so, why do you fail, why are you not successful in helping others?  You need all the help you can be given, especially “as you see the day approaching.”  And “the day” is approaching, and it behoves us to take advantage of everything that God has provided for us.  The fellowship of the saints is one of the things that God has provided; so let us make full use of it.

Random Aberrations, Apostasies, and Heresies

Money-back guarantee for your tithes if God doesn’t bless you?!?!  Now I’ve heard just about everything.  False teachers always have something new, don’t they?  Perry Noble is a world-class heretic, as are those who teach the same things he teaches; they are just shrilling for more money.  Run from such churches as fast as you can. (The whole issue of tithes for Christians is a lie to begin with — Christians do not tithe and were never told by God to tithe.)

Music segregation in church — good questions.

Steve Gaines, again.  VBS in his church is a wee bit wild and unbiblical.

A perfect example as to why Steve Cioccolanti is a false prophet.

AutoBibleCorrect.  Some good humor/satire from Elizabeth Prata.  Unfortunately, too many false teachers apparently use this App.

The Apologia Church — Hadn’t heard of this one before.  Just another group of people wanting to feel good about being spiritual without actually having to live like mature Christians.  Seeker-sensitive nonsense.

Ronnie Floyd — proven to be a false teacher.

Bill Gothard:  The Cult Next Door.

Can someone explain why the Methodist church shouldn’t be considered totally apostate?

An example of why the nutty NAR prophets are false ones!  H/T Doug Evans

Yes, we are to expose false teachers and even name them.

Another good article refuting the lie that Christians aren’t to judge.

I can’t add anything to this excellent commentary by Jeff Maples in regard to this travesty, except to say this is why our youth are so spiritually immature.

I don’t think Paul or Jesus would approve of this deception for spreading the gospel.  Nor do I think they would recommend pretend to be abased pagans!  The pragmatism of saying it permitted the delivery of a huge number of tracts is reprehensible.  Since when does pragmatism dictate our behavior?

If you don’t like what the Bible says about a particular sin, why don’t you just re-interpret it to modern cultural standards?  That’s what a couple of “leading” Anglican bishops want to do about homosexual behavior; they think “we need to change the church.”  I think they should make up their own religion and then they can do what they like.  (Oh, and contrary to a suggestion in the article, the command to multiply was NEVER for the Christian church — regardless of what so many Romanists and other legalists claim.)  Ken Ham has a good commentary on this situation.

For ending today’s episode: Benny Hinn can’t believe he’s still getting away with it.

Learn THEN Evangelize

People seem to think that nothing matters but evangelism, and so the Church herself becomes weaker instead of stronger.  The way to evangelize, ultimately, is to build up the Church.  If every member of the Christian Church were adult, were strong, were able to take strong meat, and to teach others, you would find that the world would be evangelized in a way we have never known.  It is you and I who are to do this.  We are not to sit back in crowds and let one or two do everything.  We are all meant to be teachers, every one of us; and in this is the way in which we become teachers.  Never was there such an opportunity for the individual Christian as there is at this moment.

Rachel Held Evans and Homosexuality

On 13 June 2016, 7:51PM, Rachel Held Evans posted on Facebook a commentary about the Orlando murders committed by a Muslim.  The following in blue is her commentary, with my comments below each section.

Orlando. There isn’t a tweet, a prayer, a sentiment in the world that can adequately express the heartache so many of us feel today. As the names and pictures of the victims begin to emerge, we find ourselves oscillating between sadness and anger, between calls to prayerfully grieve and calls to get busy enacting change.

Homophobia,
“Homophobia” is a word made up by homosexualists* to marginalize the debate against homosexual behavior.  Etymologically the word simply means a fear of sameness, which really makes the application to homosexuals inane.  I’ve never known anyone, nor have I read about anyone, who is afraid of homosexuality.  However, the point of the word is to attack people who say that homosexual behavior is wrong, perverted, against God, and that we should not be forced to give it sanction in any way.  Yet here is a woman who claims to be a Christian using the word which was designed to attack Christian beliefs.

religious extremism,
Another nebulous term.  How can one be “extreme” in their religion?  I’m an “extremist” Christian in that I fully believe what the Bible says and strongly adhere to the Christian faith.  What Evans and her ilk attempt to do here is to claim the attacks such as the one in Orlando are perpetrated by only “extremists” of the Muslim faith, but in reality these people are only “extreme” in the sense that they choose to live by the real teachings of Islam.

unfettered access to weapons of war,
Like the majority of liberals, Evans seems to consider anything other than a hunting shotgun as a weapon of war.  What the Orlando shooter used was not a “weapon of war” — it was simply a rifle which was used to murder.  This incident has led to attacks on the whole idea of civilians owning weapons like the AR-15 (which was not, contrary to media claims, used in this attack), which is the most popular rifle in America.  You might say it is the replacement of the old Winchester lever-action rifle of the old days as far as popularity and utility of purpose.  It is used for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense.  It may look like a “weapon of war,” but looks don’t make it so.

and perhaps some untreated anger and mental health challenges all appear to have contributed to the deadliest mass shooting in recent U.S. history,
This false narrative has been developed by the media and the politicians so as to blame everything but the murderer’s motive — killing in the name of Islam.  And Evans propagates the lie.

and I believe it is right and good to name those things even as we pause to “weep with those who weep” and even as we caution against simplistic answers that only serve to further ostracize already marginalized groups, like our Muslim neighbors or those who struggle with mental illness.
She speaks against “simplistic answers” all the while promoting her own!  No one is ostracizing anyone in regard to this attack.  But making people “victims” of evil Christians is the LEFTIST narrative, which is promoted by Evans.

That said, I want to try to articulate something I’ve been hearing from my LGBT friends
As a “Christian” Evans should know there is no such thing as “LGBT.”  People are NOT their sexual behaviors; they are people who practice sexual behaviors.  Sexual desires are not a person’s identity and the reason they became so was to promote the idea of “minority rights.”  Looking at the individual letters gives more clarification:
L = Lesbian, G = Gay.  Both these mean the same thing - persons who practice homosexual behavior.  God calls it an abomination.
B = Bisexual, meaning persons who have sexual relations with either sex.  Since sexual relations with an opposite sex partner is normal biologically (yet outside of marriage it is a sin), these people should really be in the homosexual behavior group but want the societal recognition by riding the coat-tails as a distinct identity.
T = “Transgender.”  This made-up term is for people who “feel” like they are members of the opposite sex.  No amount of self-mutilation or hormones will change what the person really is — what they were born as.  The use of this term only enables such people in their psychologically unhealthy self-delusion.
Christians should not use any of these terms, but rather identify the practitioners simply as people who are sinning grievously.

as they’ve been processing the responses of Christian leaders over the last 24-hours: Many of these leaders have publicly grieved the massacre and called for Christians to “simply love” the LGBT community in this hour of need…which is good; that’s the right thing to do.
The “love” to be extended is just the love of God for humanity in general.  Nothing more, nothing less.

But what I’m hearing from my Christian LGBT friends in particular is that these calls to grieve and love ring a bit hollow when coming from pastors and church leaders who have never spoken out about hate and violence directed against LGBT people before or who have spent years perpetuating the very misinformation, stereotypes, and theology that hurt LGBT people every day.
What Evans seeks here is that to have real “love” for people practicing self-destructive lifestyles is to not mention that they are living in abject sin and rebellion against God.  Christian leaders speak out against “hate and violence” directed at ALL people, so there is no need to single out one group just because of their sexual behaviors.  I’ve yet to meet or read any Christian who perpetuates “misinformation, stereotypes” about such practitioners, rather they speak the truth about what the lifestyle does to them physically, medically, emotionally and spiritually.  And the theology preached against such behavior is the truth of God.  If “LGBT” people are “hurt” by the truth, then that is their problem and not the problem of the theology.  Evans’ idea of theology is to sanction homosexual behavior and the self-delusion of sexual “identity.”
Oh, and she has no “Christian LGBT” friends.  They may claim to be Christian, but their actions show otherwise.  Scripture say that those who love Christ will obey his commands and not self-justify behaving in a way which God calls an abomination.  These people worship another Jesus and not the one of the Bible.

At first blush, this may seem like harsh response, but I think I get it. For years and years, LGBT people have been suffering—from disproportionately high suicide and homelessness rates
Their suffering in such matters is self-inflicted by their rebellion against God in their self-destructive behaviors.

made worse by religious leaders who stigmatize same-sex orientation and non-binary gender identities
As well they should, as should ALL people.  We “stigmatize” pedophiles, prostitutes, adulterers, zoophiles, and others who practice immoral sexual behaviors, so why shouldn’t we stigmatize those who abuse the human body sexually for perverse gratifications?  Evans knows that God “stigmatizes” such people and yet she thinks religious leaders should not preach God’s Word!  Also, “non-binary identities” is a fraud and delusion — i.e., LIES — yet Evans would have us sanction lies rather than “stigmatize” them!

and encourage parents to disassociate with their LGBT kids,
There my be some who teach this, but if the children claim to be Christian, then by Biblical commands the parents MUST disassociate with them until they repent!

from laws at home that protect the right to discriminate against LGBT people
To discriminate is not necessarily wrong.  The word merely means to distinguish right from wrong, etc, and act on such.  We discriminate against murderers by putting them in prison, e.g.
What Evans means here, as with all homosexualists, is that Christians should not have the right to refuse to provide services for activities promoting and giving tacit sanction to a particular lifestyle.  In other words, force Christians to provide services for fake weddings or force them to treat men as if they are women just because they feel like women.  Yet she claims to be a Christian!

and laws abroad that lead to their imprisonment and murder,
Americans can’t do anything about laws in other countries, and Christians in those countries also have to obey the laws.

from incessant bullying that’s often accepted when done from a pulpit by a preacher who’s “a little rough around the edges,”
Notice she just makes a blanket statement without evidence.

from ministries devoted to reparative therapy shown to do far more harm than good,
Oh, so if someone wants to help people leave a sinful lifestyle, according to Evans that is wrong?!?  And, no, they don’t do more harm than good and there is no real evidence to suggest otherwise.

and from national freak-outs over bathroom policies that appeal to fear and misinformation to demonize a small minority.
So now it’s a “freak out” when people don’t want men using women’s restrooms, locker rooms, and/or shower facilities?  Men/boys who say they “feel” like they are female should have access to the privacy of such facilities?  There is no “misinformation” about such people — the “misinformation” is the propaganda spewed by the likes of Evans.  This “small minority” by many studies is about .03% and yet Evans would have the other 99.97% bow to them and let them invade their privacy!  Notice the inflammatory word Evans uses: “demonize.”  Of course no one has ever “demonized” such people, rather they are rejecting their self-delusions and the delusion of their supporters.

If you wanted to love the LGBT community by “weeping with those who weep,” then there have been plenty of opportunities before Sunday to do so.
And there is Evans’ problem.  She suggests that Christians should have a continuous “weeping” for violence against those who practice perverse sexual behaviors rather than for people in general, again putting such people in a special class.  This particular situation should never even have been a matter of “weeping” for a special class of people, rather it should be “weeping” for just people in general, which is what most Christians do daily — “weeping” for the violence and hate against all people.

One Christian leader (who last week said those who support LGBT justice/inclusion are “cowardly”)
I don’t know who she is referring to, but he is correct in this assessment.  There should never be special “rights” or “justice” (hate crime?!?!) for anyone, and no one should “include” people practicing deviant and perverse sexual behavior as part of a normal culture.

tweeted that Christians should be the first in line to donate blood for Orlando’s victims. He’s right about that. But Christians should also be the first in line to protest the antiquated and prejudicial guidelines that forbid gay and bisexual men from donating blood themselves.
This shows Evans ignorance of the topic.  Those who practice homosexual behavior are very high risks for HIV and other STDs, and that was the reason to forbid their donations of blood. Evans apparently thinks it’s okay to spread their diseases through blood donations.

Another pastor, hours after the shooting, tweeted the importance of loving your LGBT neighbor as yourself. But this same pastor wrote a piece in 2013 encouraging Christians to indulge their “gag reflex” in response to gay people. One can understand how his words might not seem sincere.
I’d have to see the actual citation and context.  But we should all have a “gag reflex” against homosexual behavior and condemn it as sin.

I’m a big believer in grace, and I hope this post doesn’t stray from it. My prayer is that, for those congregations lagging behind, this week marks the beginning of more consistent love and concern for their LGBT neighbors
Evans is a “big believer” in twisting Scripture to suit her agenda and ideology, as has been proven many times in the past by solid theologians.  Every Christian should have the same love and concern for ALL unbelievers as they seek to evangelize them so as to see them saved from eternal damnation; there should be no new “beginning.”

(many of whom are themselves Christians, of course).
See comment above in regards to “Christian LGBT.”

Just understand why some LGBT folks don’t fall all over themselves with gratitude when a Christian leader who has consistently demeaned and ostracized them suddenly calls for empathy.
I only see real Christian leaders demean the BEHAVIOR and LIFESTYLE and not the people themselves.  As for ostracizing, if this culture did more of that we would not have such rampant sexual immorality.  Adulterers used to be ostracized, prostitutes and those who used them used to be ostracized.  There is nothing wrong with ostracizing people who are corrupting society.

There was a body count before Sunday. It’s far easier to weep over a shocking massacre committed by a person claiming another faith than to weep over the millions of small cruelties committed by those in your own community.
By “small cruelties” Evans means the teaching of the Word of God in regards to sexual activities outside of marriage, be they homosexual or heterosexual, and the teaching that “transgender” is a self-delusion.

We can do better. Let’s start today.
Evans can do better today by preaching the Word of God as it is written and not rewrite it to suit her ideology.  She can also practice REAL love by calling homosexual behavior a sin as does God; by telling people that such behavior is medically, emotionally and spiritually dangerous; and by ceasing to enable “transgender” people in their delusions.

One could spend time on Evans’ Facebook and see all sorts of false teachings and distortion of Scripture, but it would only waste one’s time.  Evans is a blatant false teacher and certainly doesn’t appear to be saved — based on her stated theology.

I recommend the excellent article, “Courage and Compassion,” for your perusal in regards to proper Christian attitude towards homosexuality.  H/T to Elizabeth Prata for pointing out this article, and Evans' post, in her blog.

*”Homosexualists” — This term was coined by an author of a book I read a few years ago (I don’t remember the book or author) to group those practicing homosexual behavior together with those who support and help them in their activism.

Professing Evangelicals Are Assisting the Pope in His Agenda to Reverse the Reformation

The following was sent as “Proclaiming the Gospel” email news on 7/116, and written by Mike Gendron:

On July 16th, Pope Francis will be calling for unity among all Christians at an ecumenical prayer rally in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of thousands of Christians will hear his video message along with messages from evangelical leaders Ronnie Floyd, Ravi Zacharias, Luis Palau, Josh McDowell, Francis Chan, Ann Voskamp, and others. Organizers of the event are attempting to gather one million Christians and Catholics in unified prayer and worship with a goal to bring unity to all who "love Jesus." The event, called Together 2016, is about laying aside what divides us to lift up Jesus who unites us.

Nick Hall, the founder of PULSE, who came up with the idea for Together 2016, said adding the Pope to the lineup is the best news yet. He said, "We are humbled and honored by his involvement and are eager to share his message with the crowd that gathers. That His Holiness would choose to speak into this historic day is a testament to the urgency and the need for followers of Jesus to unite in prayer for our nation and our world." While some may admire Hall's zeal, it is clearly not based on knowledge. For him to refer to a wolf in sheep's clothing as "His Holiness" demonstrates his lack of knowledge of God's Word. God alone is holy! Anyone who does not know Scripture cannot discern between holiness and depravity or between true and false prophets.

The evangelicals who will speak with the pope need to know that the Lord Jesus did not come to bring peace on earth but rather division (Luke 12:51). His Gospel has always divided believers from unbelievers. The Lord Jesus said He is the door that must be entered for salvation (John 10:9). Those words caused division among the people who heard them (John 10:19). Clearly, those who have been sanctified by the Gospel must avoid uniting with those who embrace another gospel and have deserted Christ (Gal. 1:6-9).

The evangelical leaders scheduled to speak with the false prophet of Rome either do not know the exclusivity of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, or they do not know the false and fatal gospel of Catholicism; or perhaps they know, but chose to be disobedient to Scripture. God's Word gives us a clear command: "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols?" (2 Cor. 6:14-16). Evangelicals who worship God in Spirit and truth must have no agreement with Catholics who worship idols, relics and a false Christ. To do so would be seeking to please men over God (Gal. 1:10).

The evangelical leaders who are planning to stand with the Pope will betray the Gospel, the Reformation, and all those martyred by Rome. It was the Word of God proclaimed by the Reformers that broke the tyrannical hold of the popes over the visible church. Now these evangelicals are aiding and abetting the Pope's attempt to reverse the Reformation. The truths that set the Reformers free from religious bondage and deception are being suppressed or ignored.

It is very disturbing to see evangelical leaders cooperating with the enemies of Christ and His Gospel. The apostate church of Rome has condemned Christians with over 100 anathemas for believing the infallible truths of God's Word. We must wonder if these evangelicals know that the worship of the Eucharist and veneration of Mary is idolatry (Ex. 20:3-5)? Don't they know that Rome's plan of salvation is a false gospel that condemns those who teach it (Gal. 1:6-9)? Don't they know that the sacrifice of the Mass and the dogma of Purgatory is a blatant denial of the finished, perfect, and sufficient work of Christ's atonement (Heb. 10:10-18)?

As more and more evangelical leaders embrace the Pope as a brother-in-Christ, they must be warned and called to repentance. Those who promote unity with false teachers, without challenging their errors, leave their own convictions and beliefs open to question. Anyone who embraces false teachers is giving credibility to their heresies. All Christians will be held accountable to God for the souls that are misled by our unwillingness to contend for the faith.

Study and Know the Scripture

There is no doubt but that the most unhappy and discouraged Christians today are those who do not exercise their senses with respect to this Word of God.  We cannot live on snippets in the spiritual realm  We have to get down to these profound truths of the Scripture; we have to make time to read them and to read books about them.  The trouble today, as it has been for so many years, is that Christian people have not been reading their Scriptures, not troubling to understand them.  They say, “Oh, I am too busy, I have too many things to do, and life is very harassing at the present time.”   But our forefathers, who worked much harder, and for much longer hours, and for much smaller wages, found the time.  Those men used to read their Scriptures and study them  They generally bought a Bible which had a commentary at the bottom of each page, and they studied it and spent time with it.  They also read other books which helped them to understand the Scriptures.  They were “exercising their senses”; and that is what made them strong.  That was the secret of the Protestant martyrs.  It was the secret likewise of the Covenanters in Scotland in the seventeenth century.  Those men were strong because they knew their Scriptures, and they knew the truth of the Scriptures.  They had exercised their senses.  They gave time to the exercise; they lived by the Word.  And thus they ceased to be babes and became mighty, strong men.

You and I must behave in a like manner.  There is no substitute for that.  We do not sit back and “just look at Jesus” to do it all for us.  That is false doctrine: I do not hesitate to use such a term.  We must exercise our senses, and we must build ourselves up in our most holy faith.  It will not happen to us automatically; there are no short-cuts in the Christian life.  If you want to build yourself up, exercise yourself in the Scriptures.
