We who preach the gospel must not think of ourselves as public relations agents sent to establish good will between Christ and the world. We must not imagine ourselves commissioned to make Christ acceptable to big business, the press, the world of sports or modern education. We are not diplomats but prophets, and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum. A.W. Tozer
Therefore let God-inspired Scripture decide between us; and on whichever side be found doctrines in harmony with the word of God, in favor of that side will be cast the vote of truth. --Basil of Caesarea
Once you learn to discern, there's no going back. You will begin to spot the lie everywhere it appears.

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service. 1 Timothy 1:12

T.D. Jakes and Homosexuality

Big flap this past week with T.D. Jakes speaking about homosexuality.  I’ve been waiting to address it to see how the situation develops, but I think we’ve come to the end for the moment so I’m commenting now.

There are some things he said which must be examined, because some say he was ambiguous and he claims he is personally against homosexuality, but then he makes it sound as if Christianity — i.e. a real Church — can approve of homosexuality!  Let’s look at some statements:

I think it is going to be diverse from church to church. Every church has a different opinion on the issue and every gay person is different. And I think that to speak that the church—the black church, the white church or any kind of church you wanna call it—are all the same, is totally not true.
Here’s a problem — If ANY church has an opinion on homosexuality other than that it is a sin and should not be tolerated, then that church is NOT a Christian church, even though Jakes is suggesting it can be.

LGBT’s of different types and sorts have to find a place of worship that reflects what your views are and what you believe like anyone else.
But can there be a true place of worship which accepts LGBTXYZ as not sinful?  If Jakes is suggesting they find a place which agrees with them and that will be legitimate worship, doesn’t this make Jakes a false teacher (of course he’s a false teacher anyway, but just add another dimension now)?

The church should have the right to have its own convictions and values; if you don’t like those convictions and values [and] you totally disagree with it, don’t try to change my house, move into your own … and find somebody who gets what you get about faith.
Here Jakes seems to be suggesting that you can have a “homosexual” church — but if you did then it wouldn’t be Christian!

He said that the issue of homosexuality is “complex.”  The issue of homosexuality is complex?!?  In what way?  God says it is sin — PERIOD.  It can’t be marriage because God defined marriage as between a man and a woman — PERIOD.  So where is the complexity?

Paul spends a lot of time wrestling back and forth, trying to understand should a woman wear a head covering, should you cut your hair.  I mean, they grappled back then and we’re grappling now because we’re humans and we are flawed and we’re not God.
Wrong!  Paul spent very little time on that topic, and that has absolutely nothing to do with homosexuality, rather Jakes just throws a red herring out there to distract from the issue at hand.

When asked if his position on homosexuality has “evolved,” Jakes agreed that it has.
Evolved and evolving,” he replied. “I think that where I am is to better understand we, the church, bought into the myth that this is a Christian nation.
Excuse me, but how can a Christian have an “evolving” position on homosexuality?  Either you agree with God that it is a sin, or you rebel against God by saying it’s okay.  There is no middle ground.  And another red herring about people thinking this is a “Christian nation” has nothing to do with the topic at hand — just another distraction.

A follow-up article was supposed to clarify what Jakes meant, but I didn’t see any change in what he was saying.

I think it is going to be diverse from church to church. Every church has a different opinion on the issue and every gay person is different.  And I think that to speak that the church—the black church, the white church or any kind of church you wanna call it—are all the same, is totally not true.
Well, it SHOULD BE true.  Every real Christian church should have the very same fundamental doctrines, and the same fundamental understanding of how God sees homosexuality as a sin.  Herein lies a major problem with Jakes’ statements — he is suggesting a real church CAN accept homosexuality.

Jakes said that he thinks homosexuals should find congregations that affirm their lifestyle.
Why would he suggest that homosexuals attend apostate congregations?  How are they supposed to learn the truth of the Christian faith, and of the saving Gospel, if they attend congregations which affirm them in their sin?

Following Christian News Network’s report on Jakes’ statements, he shot back on Facebook, remarking that he was “shocked” at how his comments were interpreted, but reiterated that while he personally disagrees with homosexual “marriage,” he “respects” the government’s provision of it.
So, does Jakes also respect the government which provided for slavery?  Does he respect the government’s provision for abortion?

He contended that when he used the phrase “evolved and evolving” in response to Hill’s question, he was only referring to the methods used to minister to homosexuals, not his position on the issue.
So how can one “evolve” in their methods to deal with sin?  Downplay it because it is culturally acceptable?

“I was shocked to read that this was manipulated in a subsequent article to say I endorsed same sex marriage! My position on the subject has been steadfast and rooted in Scripture.”
And yet he respects the government’s provision for it?!?!  How can you respect a government’s position which is in direct rebellion against God?!?

I think Michael Brown had a very good commentary about the issue, and I don’t think Jakes has really clarified anything except to say what his personal beliefs are regarding same-sex fake marriage.  Otherwise, he seems to believe a Christian assembly can affirm homosexuality and still be a Christian assembly, and that is not possible.

Spiritual Junk Food Songs

As anyone who has followed the blog for a while knows, I do a lot of criticizing modern “praise and worship” songs, mostly because they often have very poor (and sometimes heretical) lyrics which are more for creating enthusiasm and focussing on self rather than contemplating our God and our Savior, and focusing on Them.  Well, recently I’ve seen/heard several of these types of songs and could not help but think about how much they are nothing less than spiritual “junk food,” with all the sweetness and saccharine but virtually no spiritually-nutritional value.  Most of the time I think the authors believe that if we say something often enough, no matter how trite, it just might make you think outside of your emotional moment.  Then again, I think all they really want is to have you in an emotional moment!

The great hymns and songs of the Church didn’t just focus on praise or just on worship, rather they seemed to cover a whole realm of theological thinking, usually building verse by verse expounding some great truth about God, or why we praise Him, or why we worship Him, solid testimonies of how the writer was brought to faith in the Lord, encouragement of the saints, etc.  I’ve posted some of these great songs (and some are modern by authors who “get it”) and demonstrated these attributes.  Take a look at the lyrics of some of these I’ve previously posted:

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us
The Love of God
In Christ Alone
When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
Oh Church, Arise
It Is Well With My Soul
At the Cross
Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
Wonderful Grace of Jesus
Old Hundredth
The Power of the Cross
Christ the Lord is Risen Today — Alleluia!
Of the Father’s Love Begotten
Holy, Holy, Holy!  Lord God Almighty!
Behold the Lamb
Rejoice, the Lord is King!
There Is A Fountain

Okay, I think that is enough to see how meaty and meaningful these songs are.   However, what got me finally starting this post was one I was reminded of yesterday morning — “Now Thank We All Our God.”

Now thank we all our God
With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom his world rejoices;
Who from our mothers’ arms
Has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours today.

Oh, may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us
And keep us in his grace
And guide us when perplexed
And free us from all harm
In this world and the next!

All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and him who reigns
With them is highest heaven,
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heaven adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

So, now let’s look at some “new” stuff running rampant throughout the Church in an attempt to be “relevant” or to bring in “excitement” or whatever.

CARRY YOUR NAME  (one we sang a few weeks ago)
by Christy Nockels

Verse 1
How merciful the cross
How powerful the blood
How beautiful Your arms
Open for us
Open for us

Chorus 1
No greater love
God's only Son
Jesus, Jesus
No other name
Mighty to save
Jesus, Jesus

Verse 2
By Your wounds we are healed
And You have conquered the grave
And in Your rising, we will rise
To carry Your name
Above every name

Chorus 2
I will carry Your name
Carry Your name
Jesus, Your name forever
For all of my days
In all of my ways
Jesus, Your name forever

How merciful the cross
How powerful the blood
How beautiful Your arms
Open for us
Open for us

No greater love
God's only Son
Jesus, Jesus
No other name
Mighty to save
Jesus, Jesus

By Your wounds
We are healed
And You have
Conquered the grave
And in Your rising,
We will rise
To carry Your name
Above every name

No greater love
God's only Son
Jesus, Jesus
No other name
Mighty to save
Jesus, Jesus

No greater love
God's only Son
Jesus, Jesus
No other name
So strong to save
Jesus, Jesus

I will carry Your name
Carry Your name
Jesus, Your name forever
For all of my days
In all of my ways
Jesus, Your name forever

I will carry Your name
Carry Your name
Jesus, Your name forever
For all of my days
In all of my ways
Jesus, Your name forever

Jesus, Your name
Bless Your name

No greater love
God's only Son
Jesus, Jesus
No other name
Mighty to save
Jesus, Jesus

I will carry Your name
Carry Your name
Jesus, Your name forever
For all of my days
In all of my ways
Jesus, Your name forever

WOW!!  Talk about mindless repetition!  For the most part the lyrics are innocuous (except for the weird “How beautiful Your arms Open for us”) but there is no meat!!!  Just around and around building emotion.

We did the rest of these yesterday (and this is how we sang them):

Come, Now Is the Time to Worship
(I won’t sing this one just because it comes from the Vineyard, that bastion of signs and wonders and aberrant theology.  Of course the repetition drives me crazy anyway.)

Come, now is the time to worship.
Come, now is the time to give your heart.
Come, just as you are, to worship.
Come, just as you are, before your God.
Come.

One day every tongue will confess
You are God.
One day every knee will bow.
Still the greatest treasure remains for those
Who gladly choose you now.

Come, now is the time to worship.
Come, now is the time to give your heart.
Oh, come. Just as you are to worship.
Come just as you are before your God.
Come.

One day every tongue will confess
You are God.
One day every knee will bow.
Still the greatest treasure remains for those
who gladly choose you now.

One day every tongue will confess
You are God.
One day every knee will bow.
Still the greatest treasure remains for those
who gladly choose you now.

Come, now is the time to worship.
Come, now is the time to give your heart.
Come, just as you are to worship.
Come, just as you are before your God.
Come.

Oh, come. Oh, come. Oh, come.
Worship the Lord. Oh, come.

Come, come, come...

Come, Let us Worship and Bow Down

Come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our God, our Maker.
Come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our God, our Maker.

For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture
And the sheep of His hand,
And the sheep of His hand.

Come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our God, our Maker.
Come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our God, our Maker.

For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture
And the sheep of His hand,
And the sheep of His hand.

I worship You, Almighty God

I worship You, Almighty God
There is none like You
I worship You, O Prince of Peace
That is what I want to do
I give You praise
For You are my righteousness
I worship You, Almighty God
There is none like You

(Sing one key higher)
I worship You, Almighty God
There is none like You
I worship You, O Prince of Peace
That is what I want to do
I give You praise
For You are my righteousness
I worship You, Almighty God
There is none like You
There is none like You.

Sing Unto The Lord A New Song

Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth

Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth

For God is great
And greatly to be praised
God is great
And greatly to be praised

Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth

Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth

For God is great
And greatly to be praised
God is great
And greatly to be praised

Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord a new song
Sing unto the Lord all the earth
Sing unto the Lord all the earth

Of course there was the clapping to the beat, and more hands up and more emotion with every repeat.  Where’s the meat in any of these?  Just mindless emotionalism.

The last song we did to close out the service was an old hymn, “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name,” but the music team just had to jazz it up a bit and speed it up a bit (instead of “round” even notes, there were a lot of hold/cut notes).  Why can’t people quit trying to be “relevant”?!?

As annoying as these “junk food” songs are, at least they aren’t used as often as what is happening where we left, and at least they aren’t “Jesus is my boyfriend” songs, or Hillsong, or horrid theology.

Worship leaders, please hear us in the ranks.  We want MEAT!!!!  We want to be able to express deep truths in our focus on the Lord.  We don’t need a steady diet of sweets leading to spiritual “tooth decay.”

More Random Good Stuff

I’ve come across some more good stuff which I feel are worth sharing so others can be edified as I have been.

Over the past couple years I have followed John MacArthur’s “Grace to You” blog off and on, and finally decided that there was enough good stuff to sign up for the daily emails.  Some are more thought-provoking that others, of course, and the next two items are two I felt needed to be shared.

First, there is the need for us Christian men to be “Sensible Men.”  No doubt about it.

The other article is “Guarding Sexual Purity.”  Sexual immorality, including the use of pornography, is one of the most insidious evils polluting our families and society.  Christians need to set the example with sexual purity, regardless of what the world is doing around us.

Now, there is an ideology which takes the whole sexual purity to an extreme to where Christians are doing the same thing as the unbelievers by identifying themselves as their sexuality!  We are NOT our sexuality.  Our sexuality is part of who we are as humans, but it doesn’t identify us — so quit acting like the world!

Atheists and skeptics love to condemn Christians for things like the Spanish Inquisition.  A good history lesson should give you ammunition to destroy the arguments these people present.

Answers In Genesis has a good response to “The Lost World of Adam and Eve,” a publication which ignores what the Bible says and makes claims based on the secular world’s information.  Personally, I like to get my facts from Scripture rather than man’s speculations.

Excellent article by Gary Gilley about “The Holy Spirit’s Witness.

Lastly, for those who claim that our Bible was assembled by the Council of Nicea or chosen by Constantine, etc, the evidence is very plain that the N.T. books were in use in the Church before the end of the 2nd century.  So those who claim otherwise need to come up with a different story.  The entire series this article is part of is quite interesting and recommended.

The Experience to Crave

Passion and emotionalism are often and easily confused in the modern church.  The Christian life runs the full range of emotions: joy, peace, delight, love, sorrow, grief, concern, etc.  Ours is a faith not only of the head but also of the heart.  As a result it is right and proper to desire spiritual experience.  The problem is that many Christians cannot tell the difference between enthusiasm for God and manipulation of the moment.  Entertainment can look strangely like worship; fun can masquerade as joy; fleshly excitement can be perceived as divine encounter.

Part of our problem today is that out of the free-love (that is, drugs and sex) revolution of the 1960s has sprung an insatiable desire for experience.  Experience has mounted the throne and barks out orders to a doting constituency that has lost patience in a world that does not make sense.  If we cannot understand life, if in fact life makes no sense, at least we can enjoy ourselves.  If it feels good, it may not be right, but it is better than nothing.

This attitude — called postmodernism by those who like to coin phrases — has also crept into the church.  Christians want an experience that makes them feel good.  So dominating has this desire become that truth has increasingly taken a back seat to a good time.

We should be ever mindful that the Word — not experience — is our authority.  True delight in God should emerge from biblical truth.  Next we should take a good look at the Psalms.  There we find the writers absolutely in love with and excited about God.  Psalm 36:7-9, for example, reads:
“How precious is Your loving-kindness, O God!  Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.  They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures.  For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.

Here is a man (David) finding great joy in his Lord.  He is not wrapped up in the side issues; he is not drumming up feelings; he is not being whipped into a mood.  He is simply reflecting on his God and his heart can hardly contain what it views.  This is the spiritual experience we should crave.

Random Aberrations, Apostasies, and Heresies

Well, it has been a busy week around home but we were still able to take an overnight fun trip celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary Saturday and Sunday (Saturday was our actual day).  So here I am trying to catch up on blogging beyond drafts I had previously set up, and the first thing I need to do is post this collection of news items to alert my readers about what’s happening within the Church.   The bad stuff just keeps getting worse as we head closer and closer to the end time; the wolves are everywhere!

It’s hard to believe that Todd Bentley is still drawing crowds to his goat-pens.  He is one wicked wolf.

There’s always another popular teacher I haven’t heard of, who is someone everyone should avoid.  Now I’ve learned the name Lysa TerKeurst — yep, another woman playing on women’s emotions to so as to be able to abuse Scripture.  Proverbs 31 Ministries is hers, but when you learn she’s part of Steven Furtick’s goat-pen and has even preached sermons there, that should be enough in itself to tell you she is to be avoided like the plague.

The Church by the Glades is still dancing with the world rather than teaching the Word.  I found it interesting that their Facebook page says they are a “Religious Organization - Church.”  I’d say they need to drop “Church” and stick with “Religious Organization.”  I don’t think they understand what the Bible says about anything — they really need to stop playing “church.”

The Roman Catholic Church continues to demonstrate that they are no more God’s chosen portal than any other religious body.  In fact, for such claims as they make, they are really worse when they violate God’s Word.   Most recent case is in Germany, where a “married” lesbian has been approved to head Catholic day care!

False teacher and media darling Rachel Held Evans again demonstrates that she has no clue about the teachings of Jesus Christ, as she totally supports Planned Parenthood and abortion.  Wicked woman.

When you have wolves pretending to be clergy in the Church declaring that Planned Parenthood is “doing God’s work.”  How despicable can these tools of Satan be!?!?  Notice the apostate and heretical denominations represented.

One of the popular Contemporary Christian Music artists, Darlene Zschech, has decided that the leader of the apostate Roman Catholic Church is worthy to sing for as she promotes the apostate idea of ecumenicism.

This morning I read an excellent article about what causes so much of the “worship” problems in the assembly.  I recognized all the symptoms which were taking over the assembly we left earlier this year.

Fred continues his excellent review of the book, “Which Bible Would Jesus Use?

Joel Osteen by the numbers.  Wow!  The deception with him is strong.

Are there Apostles in the church today?  EMPHATICALLY NO!  I’ve had this conversation via comments on some of my other posts and also via e-mail, as all sorts of Word of Faith followers and IHOP followers, etc, attack me for denouncing their “apostles.”  This article uses the same biblical reasoning I have been using for years, but also includes the teachings of the early church on the subject.  Very well done.

And this university calls itself Christian?  Another one to cross of your list.

Lastly, here is an excellent article examining which current popular ideas about the church and the Bible are actually correct.  HT to Doug.
