Now, Glenn, we both know (as per Stan) that “there are no coincidences for those who believe in a sovereign God”! :) That makes me think, of course, of your “how I met my wife” story, and I have wanted to ask you: Are you and Jill making any big plans for marking your 50th in August? Perhaps a big trip or other adventure? As you know, my husband and I are two years behind you, and I’m already thinking about how to celebrate it.

We haven't really come up with ideas other than we'll stay in Iowa--Lots of places in Iowa we haven't been to yet. Our 20th was up in Decorah, our first year in Iowa. Lots depends on several medical issues.

Sorry to hear there are health issues but wishing you the best as you make plans.

It is a milestone year for my husband and me, too, as we both turn 70 this year. He did so earlier this month and is therefore retiring on Friday of this week! Woo hoo! After 46 years of full-time employment (the last 37.5 at the same company), it will be a huge (but happy) adjustment for both of us, as we enter a new season of life together.

And I meant to mention that to celebrate his retirement, we are planning a long road-trip this summer, from PA out to Seattle, WA, to visit our daughter, whom we have not seen in three years.

It's more about the costs vs the actual medical issue. Jill turns 70 April 1st and I hit 74 April 27th!
I was forced to retire in 2008 at 56 and if you care to know why I can't be gainfully employed now, email. Anyway, I spent almost my whole 38 year career on YOUR tax dollars. Army 6/17/70 to 2/27/75, then a week looking for work, 2nd week of March to mid-April construction laborer, mid-April 1975 to Sep 1978 Letter Sorting Machine Operator, Main post office Columbus, OH, then 9/78 to the end of 4/08 Air Traffic Controller. Being retired we seem to be busier than when I was employed! But it's great to be together almost all of the time!

Just found your road trip comment. When I retired we took a road trip to the Creation Museum the very next week. Visited Ohio family on the way down. That's not as far as your trip but we've made many trips since. Down to Alabama to visit my mom and the Naval Aviatin Museum just 30 minutes away from her. We celebrated our 40th at Yellowstone, e.g.

Decorah is a great town. Beautiful drive from there to Dubuque which is also worth a visit.

You can always head north on 1-35 and play bumper cars with protesters.

Hi Craig,
We've been to Decorah so many times I can't remember them. Sadly, some good shops, and excellent restaurant and even a wonderful gift store have all closed. The museum still has a small, but excellent, gift store where we've spent too much money!
It's been at least a decade since we crossed the border into MN and I think it will a long time before we do!

Craig’s comment about the protestors made me chuckle. For that PA-to-WA road-trip I mentioned, we will be going right through Minneapolis, no doubt; I am really hoping the protests are over by June! (Last time we drove through Minneapolis, on the way to SD, we stopped at the Mall of America.)

Glenn, as I type this, my husband is attending his retirement luncheon at work. Now, if only the government would get his Social Security benefits application processed! Their “30 days process time” has turned into 8 weeks and counting!

Y'all be careful in Minneapolis. I haven't seen anything about problems with the Interstate so you may be okay.
I don't even qualify for Social Security because if I do I get cheated out of a huge chunk of my annuity.

Wow, that is a dilemma! In our case, my husband worked until age 70 to get the maximum SS benefits, so we do need it! In addition, due to ignorance on our part, I forfeited over $60,000 due me by delaying commencing my SS benefits until recently, as I did not know about Spousal Benefits that will kick in for me upon my husband’s retirement (and was waiting for age 70 myself). Ignorance can be costly.

Well, the off-post rule is mainly trying make me say what I didn't say and trying to add what one thinks should be there rather than a conversation which isn't interfering with the topic. I've had to ban a couple people who fail to understand.
My wife didn't work outside the home to earn SS benefits.
