Issues with Piper aside, American Evangelicals are going to have a lot to answer for regarding their excessive devotion to political causes. Jesus said, "preach the gospel," NOT, "run for office."

I agree. Mr. Chatfield. One of the reasons our country is in the sad shape it is in, is because Christians have left too much of the "politics" to the non-Christians...refusing to stand for the right and getting involved where and when possible!

I don't consider Piper any sort of authority on anything, but the author at the Evangelical Dark Web doesn't improve on him either. Chuck Colson wrote a great book on the subject that easily supersedes both of them: Kingdoms in Conflict.

ReplyDeleteYou don't know what I have studied, and I'm quite familiar with Josh McDowell. No, I haven't been to seminary or had formal training, but I have studied over 1000 volumes on Christian theology and apologetics. You don't need a degree to understand the Christian faith.
By the way, I was raised in an unbelieving family, became a Mormon while in the Army, and then became a real believer in January 1974. So I too have taken a 180.
I was interested to find your articles on Eastern Orthodoxy, as being a follower of what is happening at home in the UK I have become aware that many, including evangelicals, are leaving the compromised Church of England and similar drifting denominations for Orthodoxy where they cannot quite stomach the RCC (or perhaps because the RCC is starting to compromise on the same issues for which they are leaving protestantism).
ReplyDeleteWithout having looked into its specific doctrines I have to date regarded Orthodoxy as similar 'religious' cobwebby deadness as characterises the RCC. A lot of external ritual that may actually hide an absence of internal spiritual content. Faith in the church rather than faith in Christ. This does not mean I assume all Catholics or Orthodox are necessarily unbelievers, but it doesn't bode well. Any of us can put our faith in Christ and yet have a lot of historical or denominational 'baggage'.
I'm now starting to wonder if going east may be out of the frying pan and into the fire!
I hope you won't worry about me too much, but regarding John Piper I found myself unusually more in agreement with him on this occasion. The church in its institutional form has a poor record when it gets its hands on 'secular' power, whether Catholic or protestant (Calvinists). If the penalties of the Mosaic Law were ever reintroduced there would be little chance of experienceing that wonderful phrase and such were some of you in 1 Cor 6.
