We attended an Andy Griffith Show Bible study on Sunday mornings before the service at the local Covenant church. A clip from the show was viewed and we were asked which bible verses pertain to that particular scene as the discussion ensued.
At least we didn't have to go a buy a cup of coffee and a donut for the show at the church store like some attendees chose to do at a Bethel mega church we attended in a large city near us.
I don't understand it either, Glenn, but then again, I do understand it. My personal view is there are far too many men in the pulpits of America who were not truly led to the pastorate by the Lord, but rather they chose "ministry" of their own ambitions.
Martha, a good word in the previous post on Calvinism... Calvin's character was nothing even remotely to emulate. Why so many wish to follow him bewilders me. If one were to list his behaviors - without his name - and ask most believers if they thought a man with those behaviors was regenerate, my guess is you'd get a lot of "no" answers. But then say Calvin, and...
Ah well, dear sister, as you usually say, we should be following the Author and Perfecter of our salvation, the God-man Jesus Christ, not mortal men.
And as you always encourage people to do, Glenn, let us study and measure all things by His Word.
Carolyn - Be careful when talking about Calvinism around our pandering Christian friends, or next week we may see a sermon titled: Calvinism & Hobbs Is our search for God just a spiritual game of Calvinball?
Hello Carolyn, Grace and peace to you as well, dear sister! You most certainly have the gift of encouraging believers in their faith in Jesus Christ and are a blessing here at Glen's blog. I have learned from you as well as others in understanding the Scriptures that were once and for all delivered to us saints.
Likewise, I've appreciated your singular focus on following Christ and Him crucified, even in the midst of the piles of teachings of men that you've encountered (for better, or for worse). I'm always encouraged at how you persevere and endeavor to keep that focus, even when people deride you for doing so.
The push to use worldly clips from movies or TV originates from Bill Hybels and especially the big man R. Warren. While Jesus admonished us not to be part of the world, these two (and others since) have done just the opposite. I remember that "Bible" study using the Andy Griffith show. I believe it was either late 1990's or early 2000's.

Using Imagine Dragons as sermon material?!?!?
ReplyDeleteYep. Pretty weird, isn't it?

Martha,
ReplyDeleteAndy Griffith -- now that's funny!
I just don't understand preachers using TV and movies for their sermon material.
Hi Glenn, Martha,
ReplyDeleteMercy.

Grace and peace to you both, and you also, Jesse.

Is our search for God just a spiritual game of Calvinball?
No, really - it could happen.
Doug,
ReplyDeleteI haven't the slightest idea what you are trying to say.
Perspicuity, friend.

PS - and I'm not meaning to come across as rude, forgive me if I did. I just really don't understand and need clarity!
