People, use discernment with everything you hear and read, and if your church leaders are not using discernment, bring things to their attention. You never know that you might be the one to make them think!

ReplyDeleteThankfully we've never been in a truly cultic church (as described in that article), but item #4 on their list, "Members are not allowed to ask questions of the leadership", is a common occurrence we've seen in evangelical churches. It tends to play out in a more subtle fashion in the evangelical world than one would perhaps experience in a cult. But that attitude is still present. Glad you posted the GTY blog about questioning leadership. No Christian leader is above question, nor above accountability. Paul called those who questioned and examined him "more noble".
ReplyDeleteKari Jobe - I know I've commented on her before. Years ago we heard a recording of one of her songs played during a service, and in the song she used either the word "gotta" or "gonna". Not knowing anything about her, I said to my husband that her poor lyrics were likely an indication of a shallow (at best) theology.
Finally, I second Alec's comment - LOVE the picture and quote at the top of the post! But mercy, if you ever said to a believer who was defending a false teacher, "you're an idolater, and you need to repent", I can only imagine the backlash!!! Probably would at least include some "judge not!"'s and "you're a Pharisee!"'s.
