Did They Really Say That?!?

?!?
“Existence continues to be a belief of corporeal sense until the Science of being is reached.  Error brings its own self-destruction both here and hereafter, for mortal mind creates its own physical conditions.  Death will occur on the next plane of existence as on this, until the spiritual understanding of Life is reached.  Then, and not until then, will it be demonstrated that ‘the second death hath no power.’”
Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.77

This is much more like Hinduism than Christianity.  So, our existence is only “a belief of corporeal sense”?  NO - we can believe or not, and yet we still exist.  “Mortal mind creates its own physical conditions”?!?  So if a person is captured by the enemy and tortured as a prisoner of war, did his mind really create those conditions?!?  This is totally absurd, and there is no “Science” involved.

She claims death will continue in each “plane of existence,” and continue until we reach “the spiritual understanding of Life.”  However, this Hindu belief is incompatible with Scripture, since through Christ we already have an understand of life, and the Bible tells us that we die only once - and then face judgment.

There is nothing Christian nor science about Christian Science.

  1. Hi Glenn,

"There is nothing Christian nor science about Christian Science.". Agreed! (FYi - comment coming from a non-Calvinist, but a believer who is appreciative of much from GTY) - John MacArthur once said Christian Science was like Grape Nuts, which are not grapes nor nuts - and like you added, that it is not Christian nor science.

That nonsense idea that MBE had "for mortal mind creates its own physical conditions" - ludicrous. Not only is it a new age concept, but also seems to be popular in the health/wealth/prosperity (hwp) crowd. That you can "think faith thoughts" and thus determine your destiny and control outcomes. They claim if a healing doesn't happen, it's your fault for no faith. Some of their teachers claim we can speak things into existence. I heard a recording of a lady hwp preacher tell someone to talk to their wallet, telling it "you are a fat billfold full of money". It's the same false concept that MBE taught. What bunk!
